TSMC, the world's largest foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturer), has postponed its plan to develop a state-of-the-art 1.4㎚ (nanometer, one billionth of a meter) factory site in Taichung, Taiwan, according to Taiwanese media reports on the 30th.
According to United Daily News and China Times, the Central Taiwan Science Park Administration originally planned to provide the site so that construction could begin in June, but this schedule has been delayed by six months to December.
The administration stated that this delay is due to an internal agreement within TSMC to adjust the pace of factory construction. Other plans, such as establishing a sub-2㎚ advanced process fab on the second phase development site of the Central Taiwan Science Park Taichung expansion, remain unchanged.
Chen Zhiang, a senior industry consultant at the Taiwan Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC), said the postponement is related to TSMC's recent earnings announcement, where it lowered the global foundry market growth forecast for this year from 20% to 10% compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, TSMC recently announced at a technology conference held in Santa Clara, California, that it plans to begin semiconductor production using the 1.6㎚ process from the second half of 2026.
