"Statement with the intention of 'wanting to receive attention'"
A teenage boy who posted an online threat to carry out a stabbing at a girls' middle and high school in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, has been arrested.
According to the police on the 30th, the Gangdong Police Station arrested Mr. A the previous day on charges including intimidation. Mr. A is suspected of posting dozens of messages on internet communities and social networking services (SNS) between February and March this year, threatening to carry out a terror attack at a specific school.
The police apprehended Mr. A on the 30th of last month and applied for an arrest warrant the following day, but the court dismissed it, stating that "there is insufficient reason to consider detention necessary for a juvenile."
After additional investigation, the police confirmed that Mr. A had also posted messages threatening terror attacks at locations including Jamsil Gymnasium, the Yongsan Presidential Office, Seoul Station, and the Strawberry Festival site in Nonsan, Chungnam.
The police reapplied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A, and the court issued it, citing concerns over evidence tampering and flight risk.
During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he posted the messages "for fun and to gain attention." Mr. A is scheduled to be transferred to the prosecution soon.
