Victim's Mother Dies Due to Incident
"Revealing the Truth That a Harsh Price Is Paid"
A man in his 20s who falsely accused a classmate of theft and extorted about 200 million won was sentenced to six years in prison. The court’s strong rebuke of the defendant has drawn attention.
"Victim lived like a slave for a long time... The harsh reality, not drama, must be revealed to the perpetrator"
On the 30th, Judge Baek Gwang-gyun of the Criminal Division 2 at the Western Branch of Busan District Court sentenced A (27), who was detained and indicted for charges including extortion, coercion, defamation, threats, trespassing, and violation of the Stalking Punishment Act, to six years in prison. Judge Baek stated, "B (classmate and victim) has no theft charges due to a kind heart, but endured threats for a long time and lived like a slave," adding, "The victims had built a loving family and lived happy days, but due solely to A’s evil acts, they suffered irreparable damage, losing vast property and even a precious life."
He continued, "Even considering only the core crime of extortion in this case, the circumstances after the crime are so horrific and tragic that nothing worse can be imagined," and said, "When adding related crimes such as coercion and stalking committed to extort more money, this case can be evaluated as the worst of the worst," unusually harshly criticizing the defendant. He further noted, "In our society, based on distrust of criminal procedures, novels, movies, and dramas that depict various forms of vigilante justice outside the courtroom are popular," and ruled, "The judiciary urgently needs to reveal the stern truth that in reality, the price paid is harsher than in virtual worlds, and this urgency is the foundation for the realization of the rule of law."
Accused of theft for touching own wallet... Extorted 200 million won from victim mother and daughter, victim’s mother dies
Earlier, A falsely accused B of theft after witnessing B touch A’s wallet, claiming "the act was caught on CCTV," and extorted money by saying, "If you pay, I won’t report you." In reality, B only touched the wallet, but under continuous threats from A, transferred 930,000 won.
The threats did not end there. A claimed B stole from the store where A worked to extort more money and even went to B’s mother to take and use her card. Over about two years, A extorted a total of 200.96 million won from B and her mother in 34 installments. It is reported that A used the extorted money on a boyfriend and living expenses. Unable to endure further, B and her mother filed a complaint for extortion and other charges, after which A fled for a year before being caught by the police. As a result of this case, B’s mother was found dead at home after suffering greatly.
