Yoon Jae-ok: "Yeongsu Meeting, First Step Toward Cooperation... Will Give Strong Support to Medical Reform"

Hwang Woo-yeo as Emergency Committee Chairman: "A Person with Virtue and Integrity"

Yoon Jae-ok, floor leader of the People Power Party and acting party leader, positively evaluated the summit meeting between President Yoon Suk-yeol and Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, calling it "the first step toward cooperation." He also emphasized that the ruling party, opposition, and government must discuss and complete medical reform.

On the morning of the 30th, Yoon, acting party leader, said at a floor strategy meeting at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, "The meeting between President Yoon and Leader Lee, which lasted over two hours the day before, is significant in that it provided an opportunity for the ruling and opposition parties, which had been running parallel lines throughout the 21st National Assembly, to move toward cooperation." He added, "Although differences were not resolved all at once, the fact that the president and the leader of the main opposition party directly confirmed each other's thoughts gives this meeting considerable meaning." He further emphasized, "The summit meeting was the first step toward cooperation," and said, "I hope that communication among the ruling party, opposition, and government will become more active as a result of this meeting, and that various policies will be coordinated in ways that help the public’s livelihood."

Yoon welcomed Leader Lee’s positive response to the increase in medical school quotas. Lee Do-woon, chief public relations officer of the presidential office, stated in a briefing the day before, "Leader Lee said that medical reform is an urgent task, that the president’s policy direction is correct, and that the Democratic Party will cooperate." Yoon said, "Since we have confirmed the same intention regarding medical reform, if only differences in detailed methodologies are adjusted, it will greatly empower the implementation of the plan," adding, "The ruling party, opposition, and government must discuss medical reform and put an end to the public’s inconvenience caused by doctors leaving the field." He also urged, "Medical organizations should not underestimate the significance of yesterday’s meeting and come forward to the dialogue table to solve the problem."

However, Yoon still showed a negative reaction to the 250,000 won livelihood recovery support fund pledged by Leader Lee. Yoon said, "It seems the Democratic Party is dissatisfied because President Yoon did not agree to the livelihood recovery support fund," and pointed out, "I understand that the Democratic Party has political reasons for repeatedly insisting on this policy, which was pledged before the election, but if resources are allocated without considering individual circumstances, there will be side effects such as high inflation and high interest rates."

Meanwhile, Yoon expressed expectations for Hwang Woo-yeo, former leader of the Saenuri Party (the predecessor of the People Power Party), who was appointed as the new emergency committee chairman. Yoon said, "He is a person of virtue and character, capable of coordinating and mediating various opinions, so I thought he was the right person for the emergency committee chairman position," adding, "With former Chairman Hwang’s inauguration, the leadership has been reorganized 18 days after former People Power Party emergency committee chairman Han Dong-hoon’s resignation, and we are ready to start anew."
