264 Teams Including Elementary, Middle, High School, Rookie, University, and General Divisions
The 22nd Gurye National Gayageum Competition, hosted by Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do and organized by the Gayageum Byeongchang Preservation Society (Chairperson Kang Jeongsuk), will be held for two days from Saturday, May 4 to Sunday, May 5 at the Seomjin Art Hall in Gurye.
This competition will feature 273 participants from 264 teams across the nation, including elementary, middle, and high school divisions, rookie division, university division, and general division, competing fiercely.
The competition will be divided into 14 categories including Sanjo, Byeongchang, and creative compositions. The grand prize in the general division will be awarded the Presidential Award, and the Cultural Heritage Administration Commissioner’s Award will be given for the gold prize. The grand prize in the university division will receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award, among others.
Additionally, to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the National Gayageum Competition, a congratulatory performance will be held on Friday, May 3 at 5 p.m. at the Seomjin Art Hall. Hosted by traditional musician Lee Yerang, the event will feature Gayageum Sanjo and Byeongchang, a scene from Heungboga called Hwacho-jang, folk dance Beokku-chum, Taekkyeon, and Han Obaeknyeon, with past award winners and local artists performing together.
Kim Sunho, the county governor, said, “Our Gurye, the hometown of the master of Gayageum Sanjo, Seo Gongcheol, is a city of arts that has produced numerous masters and virtuosos, and is the original home of sound.” He added, “We hope many people will attend the country’s most prestigious Gayageum competition and the commemorative performance.”
