The Volkswagen hatchback 'Golf,' which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, has surpassed 50,000 units in cumulative sales in South Korea.
According to Volkswagen on the 29th, the Golf, which entered the Korean market in 2005, recorded cumulative domestic sales of 50,089 units as of March this year. It is the first imported hatchback model to exceed 50,000 units in cumulative sales in the Korean market, often called the "graveyard of hatchbacks."
Since its initial launch in 1974, the Volkswagen Golf has evolved into its 8th generation model. It is praised for its reasonable product value, practical space, solid driving performance, and well-rounded fundamentals.
With Volkswagen Korea's entry into the Korean market, the 5th generation Golf was introduced domestically. Volkswagen Korea also launched the high-performance Golf GTI, equipped with the innovative DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) dual-clutch transmission and a high-output engine.
A Volkswagen official explained that the Golf's popularity in the Korean market is due to its reasonable price and maintenance costs, advanced technology beyond its class, and the high-level driving performance of an authentic German hatchback.
The current lineup sold domestically includes two models: the Golf 2.0 TDI and the Golf GTI. The Golf TDI offers excellent efficiency and solid fundamentals, while the Golf GTI is a performance model featuring a high-performance TSI engine and precise handling capabilities.
