Emerging New Income Source in Niche Market through Yujayeop Product Development
Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced that on the 26th, it held the first Goheung Yuja (Citron) New Leaf Tea Tasting event at Yuja Park in Pungyang-myeon, the main production area of Goheung yuja, to pioneer new markets reflecting yuja consumption trends and to promote increased income for farmers.
The event was attended by Governor Gong Young-min, domestic tea masters, and various experts. It proceeded in the order of delivering yuja new leaves carefully cultivated and harvested by farmers, tea roasting for harmony, and new leaf tea tasting accompanied by meditation.
Additionally, the development of yuja new leaf tea in line with traditional tea culture consumption trends reaffirmed its growth potential and served as a good opportunity to announce expectations for creating new income sources both domestically and internationally.
In particular, many attendees at this tasting event said, "It was a meaningful time to experience the subtle fragrance and a different taste unique to yuja," and it received favorable reviews, with evaluations comparable to the well-known Boseong green tea.
A county official stated, "Breaking away from the limitations of producing, processing, and selling only yuja fruit, we will pioneer a new niche market through the development of domestic tea using yuja new leaves and establish it as a key product for farmers' income," adding, "We will also actively support the fostering of the yuja food industry at the county level in the future."
Meanwhile, Goheung yuja has been steadily cultivated for over 600 years and is one of the region's representative specialty products. It is currently registered as Agricultural Product Geographical Indication No. 14, accounting for 60% of the national production volume (1,427 farms/643ha), generating an annual income of 16.27 billion KRW.
