GTX is a metropolitan express railroad connecting major hubs in downtown Seoul from the outskirts of the metropolitan area. It is a new mode of transportation that operates at about three times the speed of regular subways.
The 55-inch transparent OLED supplied by LG Display was applied to the windows of GTX-A train cars. It provides passengers with route maps, operation, and convenience information at a glance, helping to create a comfortable and smart cabin environment.
In particular, the large display with clear image quality enhances visibility, making it easy to check information. Unlike regular displays, the transparent screen like a window offers an open spatial feeling, and in emergencies, it allows external visibility, ensuring safety.
LG Display applied special reinforced glass to the display to ensure stable operation even on trains running at high speeds of over 150 km/h, increasing durability against shocks and vibrations compared to previous models. It also passed the Korea Railroad Standard Specification test.
LG Display and SG Rail, the GTX-A project operator, have initially introduced and pilot-applied 16 transparent OLEDs on an 8-car train (one set) running the Suseo~Dongtan section. They plan to expand the application to the entire GTX-A line after gathering user feedback.
An LG Display official said, "Based on the innovative customer experience that only transparent OLED can provide, we will continuously create new markets through collaboration with various heterogeneous industries."
Since 2020, LG Display has been supplying transparent OLEDs for railways to major subway systems in Chinese cities such as Beijing, Fuzhou, Shenzhen, and to Japan’s JR East trains. The company’s transparent OLED, the only one mass-produced in the world, is highly transparent and lightweight, making it applicable in various fields such as mobility and distribution.
