The 100th anniversary ceremony of Chuksan Port in Yeongdeok-gun, regarded as the best beautiful harbor on the East Coast, was held on the 25th at the waterfront near the quality and hygiene management-type auction hall of Yeongdeok Northern Fisheries Cooperative.
Hosted by Yeongdeok Northern Fisheries Cooperative and sponsored by Gyeongbuk Province and Yeongdeok-gun, the event was attended by about 300 people including Park Hyung-su, elected member of the National Assembly, Kim Gwang-yeol, mayor of Yeongdeok-gun, Son Deok-su, chairman of Yeongdeok County Council and council members, Hwang Jae-cheol, Gyeongbuk provincial assembly member, Noh Dong-jin, chairman of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, local fisheries cooperative heads, Park Sang-wook, chairman of the Korea Fisheries Management Association, as well as local residents and fishermen.
The event began with a traditional folk band parade, followed by a photo exhibition showcasing the long history and changes of Chuksan Port, and a commemorative video produced on the theme of the 100th anniversary of the port’s opening. A specially made monument commemorating the 100th anniversary of Chuksan Port also attracted much attention.
Mayor Kim Gwang-yeol said, “Chuksan Port, which has served as the focal point of the local economy for the past 100 years, will continue to develop with the best efforts of over 600 public officials. I sincerely thank the residents and fishermen who have been witnesses and main actors of Chuksan Port’s 100-year history.”
Opened in 1924, Chuksan Port is known for its beautiful coastline and the spectacular rocky island Jukdosan rising from the sea. Along with Ganggu Port and Daejin Port, it is one of the major ports and beautiful harbors of Yeongdeok-gun.
It is especially recognized as a prime marine trekking destination and a key point of the Blue Road. It is also the main production area of mulgajami (a type of flatfish), the soul food of Yeongdeok residents, where the Mulgajami Festival is held annually around early May.
Yeongdeok-gun is promoting the ‘Chuksan Blue City’ project, investing 19 billion KRW, scheduled for completion in October, to improve and develop Chuksan Port. Additionally, the improvement project of Local Road No. 20 between Chuksan Port and Dogok, expected to be completed in June this year, aims to revitalize the tourism industry centered on Chuksan Port.
Furthermore, efforts are being made to improve regional safety and residents’ living conditions through the Chuksancheon River disaster prevention project, with a budget of 30 billion KRW and targeted for completion in 2025, and the Chuksan drainage basin urban flooding prevention project, with an investment of 22 billion KRW and scheduled for completion in 2026.
