Gangbuk-gu Adds 30 Food Waste RFID Weighing Machines

Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) is conducting a project to support the installation of RFID food waste weighing machines for local apartment complexes and general households to reduce residents' food waste output, and is accepting applications until May 31.

The RFID food waste weighing machine operates by recognizing a card and then automatically measuring the weight of the food waste when it is disposed of, charging a fee based on the amount disposed.

Unlike the existing volume-based waste bags and complex-specific disposal methods, the fee calculation and charging method is objective, and since fees are charged per household, it is highly effective in reducing food waste.

Also, unlike the existing food waste collection bins, the opening only opens when disposing, which resolves inconveniences such as odors, making it effective in improving the disposal environment.

The fee is 130 KRW per kilogram, and users can choose to pay via a prepaid rechargeable card or postpaid method.

Since introducing the RFID food waste volume-based system in 2018, the district has distributed a total of 384 RFID weighing machines to date. This year, an additional 30 units will be supported.

Applicants must be apartment complexes with 50 or more households or general households with 10 or more households; in the case of general households, consent from two-thirds or more of the residents is required.

The district plans to select support recipients on a first-come, first-served basis, considering the number of households using the service, electricity supply, installation space, and other factors. Once support is confirmed, the purchase and installation of the weighing machines will be provided free of charge, and users will share the cost of electricity and other usage fees.

For detailed information on applying for the RFID weighing machine and required documents, please check the news section on the Gangbuk-gu website or contact the Cleaning Administration Division for assistance.

The district is also conducting a project to support the installation of large-scale food waste reducers for apartment complexes with 100 or more households. The large-scale reducer is an eco-friendly device that processes food waste and converts the byproducts into compost and other uses. When the district supports the large-scale reducer, users share the electricity costs and other fees.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, stated, "We will continue to support the installation of RFID food waste weighing machines and large-scale reducers to reduce food waste and eliminate inconveniences such as odors, thereby creating a pleasant residential environment."
