‘Cheongsong Apples’ from Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Grand Prize in the apple category of the 2024 Korea Representative Brand Awards for the 12th consecutive year on the 17th.
Cheongsong County is fully committed to supporting the production of high-quality Cheongsong apples.
Currently, the cost of apple production is increasing every year, and concerns are rising over labor shortages due to an aging population, as well as natural disasters such as abnormal temperatures, typhoons, and hail caused by climate change.
To overcome these various crises, Cheongsong-gun is promoting the distribution project of ‘stemless apples’ to reduce production costs, and is responding to spring low-temperature damage by supporting micro-sprinkler devices, thermal imaging fans, and cold damage mitigators.
Additionally, plans are underway to supply high-quality saplings resistant to pests and diseases to ensure the production of premium apples.
Furthermore, to expand apple production, support is being provided for orchard establishment through the FTA Fruit Tree High-Quality Facility Modernization Project, and with the creation of future-oriented orchards to innovate the Cheongsong apple cultivation system, the cultivation area is increasing. This year, production is expected to reach 80,000 tons, with a goal of 100,000 tons in the next 3 to 5 years.
Alongside this, a policy to reduce production costs is being promoted with the aim of pilot-producing 5,000 tons of ‘leafless Cheongsong apples’ to lessen the burden on farmers. Promotional activities targeting both farmers and consumers will continue to lead innovation in the domestic apple market distribution methods and strive to boost sales.
Moreover, as the cultivation area shifts northward due to climate change and the cultivation area in Gangwon-do is rapidly increasing, new varieties suitable for our region, such as ‘Shinano Gold,’ known as the golden apple, will be developed to respond to climate change and enhance the competitiveness of the apple industry.
Governor Yoon Kyung-hee stated, “Cheongsong-gun is the place that cultivates and produces the most apples in Korea. We will continue to maintain our status as the nation’s number one premium brand as we have until now.” She added, “The apple industry is the most important industry for Cheongsong, so we will strive to maintain the top position nationwide through the production of high-quality apples.”
