The "Exploring Pansori at Gochang Hyanggyo" program was selected for the first time this year in the 2024 Hyanggyo and Seowon Cultural Heritage Utilization Contest by the Cultural Heritage Administration and is being promoted with a total budget of 50 million KRW.
It will be held 13 times from the 26th of this month through December at Gochang Hyanggyo and various locations throughout Gochang County.
At Gochang Hyanggyo, historical education fostering the spirit of the seonbi (Confucian scholars) will be conducted. The program includes exploring cultural heritage sites in the Gochang area such as Seonunsa Temple, Gochang Dolmen Site, and Ungok Ramsar Wetlands, as well as heritage preservation explorations amid climate change, structured as a field trip program to enjoy the elegance of Gochang Pansori.
The field trip program combining exploration of Gochang’s cultural heritage and enjoyment of Gochang Pansori consists of three programs: "Gochang Healing Tour You Must Visit Before You Die," "Exploring Pansori at Gochang Hyanggyo," and "Our Community United at Gochang Aetteul." It targets the general public, students, and socially vulnerable groups in the Gochang area who are interested in exploring Gochang’s cultural heritage.
Shin Young-nam, Jeongyo, said, “We planned a program to cultivate Confucian and seonbi spirit and to enjoy Gochang Pansori against the backdrop of Gochang Hyanggyo, which holds over 600 years of history,” adding, “We will promote this project so that the cultural heritage in the Gochang area can be widely known through this program.”
Na Yoon-ok, Director of the County Culture and Arts Division, said, “We expect that various programs utilizing Gochang Hyanggyo will greatly help restore the preciousness of traditional culture we have forgotten, as well as foster youth character and social morality,” and added, “We will do our best to make the region’s cultural heritage a place for historical education and a venue where residents and tourists can enjoy high-quality cultural heritage.”
