Geumcheon-gu Wins Grand Prize in the 2024 Governance Local Politics Awards for Heads of Local Governments

'Geumcheon-type Resident Autonomy Committee Operation' Honored with Grand Prize in Local Government Heads Category

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced on the 24th that it received the 'Grand Prize' in the autonomous district head category at the 6th Governance Local Politics Awards 2024 held at the National Assembly Library Auditorium, recognizing its achievements in promoting the Geumcheon-style resident autonomy based on governance.

The Governance Local Politics Awards, hosted by the Governance Center and supported by the Presidential Commission on the Local Era and the Korea Association of Mayors, Governors and District Heads, marked its 6th year this year.

The Governance Local Politics Awards select and honor local government heads and local council members who have contributed to the spread of proper autonomous decentralization activities and the enhancement of awareness of local politics based on the governance paradigm.

Geumcheon-gu participated under the theme "Blooming the Flower of Governance! Operation of Geumcheon-style Resident Autonomy Committee," receiving the grand prize awarded to the single most outstanding local government head across all fields.

Geumcheon-gu was highly evaluated for establishing the first resident autonomy committees in all neighborhoods nationwide and prioritizing their sustainable operation by formulating and implementing the Geumcheon-style resident autonomy committee policy.

Key policies include ▲ Establishing the vision and policies for Geumcheon-style resident autonomy committee activities ▲ Outsourcing the operation of the resident autonomy committee community centers to the private sector ▲ Establishing and supporting the operation of the resident autonomy committee secretariat ▲ Holding deliberative resident general assemblies ▲ Implementing joint agendas of resident autonomy committees for carbon neutrality. Notably, the improvement deliberation forum for sauna facilities at the Neighborhood Village Connection Center and the district’s own resident autonomy committee expo received attention.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, "I am pleased that our efforts to grow the resident autonomy committees into representative organizations of residents and to establish a public-private governance system at the neighborhood level have been recognized." He attributed the honor to the hard work of committee members who engage in discovering and solving local community issues on the ground of neighborhood-level resident autonomy and to the dedication of public officials striving to establish the governance system, dedicating the award to the 10 neighborhood resident autonomy committees and neighborhood administrative officials.

For the directions of the 4th term resident autonomy committee activities in 2024 and 2025, Geumcheon-gu plans to continuously pursue "the establishment of an integrated living autonomy governance system encompassing village communities, social economy, and cooperative councils centered on the neighborhood-level resident autonomy platform."
