Incheon International Airport Corporation conducted a design competition for the comprehensive improvement project from February to April this year, and after evaluation by a panel of judges, the Heerim Consortium (Heerim, Geunjeong) was chosen as the winning proposal.

This project involves large-scale facility improvements to Terminal 1, which has been in use since Incheon International Airport opened in 2001. The goal is to transform Terminal 1 into an eco-friendly, smart advanced airport through the replacement of aging facilities, functional enhancements, overall improvements to operational facilities, and the introduction of cutting-edge technologies. The estimated construction cost is 1 trillion KRW, with design fees amounting to approximately 50 billion KRW, making it a mega construction project.

Heerim has participated in all phases of construction projects at Incheon International Airport, including Terminals 1 and 2, and has experience in establishing basic plans for expansion and extension of Jeju International Airport facilities, as well as renovation of the international passenger terminal at Gimpo International Airport.

Additionally, Heerim holds numerous overseas airport references, including Long Thanh International Airport in Vietnam, Phnom Penh International Airport in Cambodia, Qingdao International Airport in China, Mongomeyen International Airport in Equatorial Guinea, Khabarovsk Airport in Russia, Almaty Airport in Kazakhstan, Tashkent International Airport in Uzbekistan, and Puerto Princesa Airport in the Philippines.

A Heerim representative explained, "We aim to transform the terminal space with the design concept of 'Mangae,' which symbolizes a new beginning and the start of a journey toward greater leaps. We proposed not only design improvements but also comprehensive and optimized plans in areas such as smart check-in systems, complete overhaul of air conditioning methods, modernization of passenger services, and baggage handling system (BHS) screening equipment." They added, "We will do our best to upgrade the airport into a smart advanced airport that meets the increasing air traffic demand and enhances passenger convenience."

Meanwhile, Incheon International Airport Corporation plans to complete the basic and detailed designs by 2027 based on the winning design proposal, followed by extensive facility improvement construction, aiming to complete the comprehensive improvement project around 2033.
