Wanju Cultural Heritage Research Institute and Gochang County Joint Academic Survey
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage's Wanju National Cultural Heritage Research Center signed a memorandum of understanding with Gochang County on the 23rd for academic investigation, research, and utilization of the Gochang Jukrim-ri Dolmen Site. Moving forward, they will jointly conduct academic surveys, preservation management, and utilization of research outcomes. This includes distribution status surveys, precise excavation investigations, aerial LiDAR exploration for highland and landscape analysis, and quarry site research through scientific component analysis.
The Gochang Jukrim-ri Dolmen Site is a nationally designated cultural heritage site and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the largest dolmen cluster on the Korean Peninsula, with over 550 dolmens, exhibiting various forms such as table-type and capstone-type. The table-type involves constructing a rectangular burial chamber above ground and placing a cover stone on top. It is frequently found in the northern Korean Peninsula and Liaodong region and is called the northern style. The capstone-type involves creating a burial chamber underground and placing a large cover stone above it. This is the most commonly found form in Korea.
An official from the research center stated, "We aim to secure basic data for the preservation, management, and maintenance of the Gochang Jukrim-ri Dolmen Site and to strengthen its value and status as a World Heritage site through specialized and scientific research."
