The regulations on space information related to national security under the jurisdiction of the National Intelligence Service have been revised, raising expectations for space security management suitable for the 'New Space' era. A basis has been established to protect national space assets, including information collection and cryptographic technology development.
According to the scientific community and the Ministry of Government Legislation on the 24th, the 'Space Security Work Regulations' (Presidential Decree No. 34434) have been amended and came into effect the day before. The revised space security work regulations aim to produce accurate and timely information on space security threats to secure national competitiveness in space. The amended regulations include specific details on space information activities. In particular, 'space security work' is divided into 'security-related space information' and 'space information security work,' specifying related information production and protection activities.
Security-related space information work includes information collection as well as responses to space threats and cryptographic technology development, securing the basis for activities to protect national space assets from space threats. Additionally, plans have been made to establish a National Space Security Center and designate specialized research institutions, as well as to secure cooperation with external organizations and technology necessary for performing space security work.
Oh Il-seok, Vice President of the Korean Space Security Society, stated, "Although space is rapidly emerging as a new security domain, the binding force of international norms for safe and peaceful use of space is somewhat limited," emphasizing the significance of the regulation revision by saying, "There is a need to actively promote intelligence activities."
