Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) will operate programs utilizing the cultural heritage of hyanggyo and seowon at Yangcheon Hyanggyo, the only hyanggyo in Seoul, from next month until November. The district is conducting various programs to make hyanggyo and seowon cultural spaces full of people and stories, as well as places to cultivate humanities literacy.
This program, themed "A Meeting Between Joseon Dynasty Students and 21st Century New Students!", inherits the educational function of hyanggyo and incorporates the latest IT technology in line with 21st-century education trends.
The main programs include ▲ Do You Know Astronomer Gyeomjae Jeong Seon? Season 2 ▲ Yangcheon-hyeon Students Enjoying Pungnyu with the Six Arts (六藝) ▲ DIgital Food (食): Yangcheon Hyanggyo Future Talents, New Students!
"Do You Know Astronomer Gyeomjae Jeong Seon? Season 2" is a traditional science experience program that combines stories from the time of Gyeomjae Jeong Seon, a representative historical figure of the Gangseo area, during his time at Gwansanggam (the astronomical government office) with traditional Korean constellations. Participants learn the principles of the Joseon Dynasty calendar through mathematics and explore seasonal changes in constellations using Joseon-era star maps and astronomical observation instruments. It will be held seven times every Thursday from May 7 to June 13.
"Yangcheon-hyeon Students Enjoying Pungnyu with the Six Arts (六藝)" is a program that allows participants to experience the six basic liberal arts taught at hyanggyo in the past: etiquette, music, mathematics, archery, writing, and food. Participants can try painting East Asian ink wash paintings called 'sumukhwa' using ink, experience Korea’s traditional archery called 'gukgung,' and make student tteokbokki using crops from the hyanggyo garden. It will be held every Sunday from May 13 to November 17, totaling 30 sessions.
"DIgital Food (食): Yangcheon Hyanggyo Future Talents, New Students!" is an experiential program to learn about food tech, one of the promising future industries, and make traditional snacks using food printing. Participants experience traditional food culture from the Joseon Dynasty, taste their own traditional desserts created with 3D food printing technology, and learn personalized nutrition management methods. It will be held six times from September to October this year.
These programs require prior registration, and schedules and applications can be made through the Yangcheon Hyanggyo internet cafe. The participation fee is 5,000 KRW per program.
District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon said, "We have prepared various programs to experience traditional culture at Seoul’s only hyanggyo," and added, "We will actively support Yangcheon Hyanggyo to be loved as a traditional cultural space used by more residents."
