Design Competition Judging Results: 'Reconnect' Selected as Final Winner with Theme of 'Connection'
Overcoming Disconnection and Maximizing Accessibility through Integration of City, River, and Deck, Connecting Waterfront Walkways and Bicycle Paths...Improved Mobility with Elevator Placement, Expanded Floor Area Featuring Convenience Store, Cafe, Community Center, Deck, and Roof Terrace
Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that the architectural firm Inyou’s “RECONNECT” has been selected as the winning design for the waterfront cultural community space tentatively named “Anyangcheon Big Deck,” to be created along the Anyangcheon riverside near Sinmokdong Station.
“Anyangcheon Big Deck” is a waterfront vitality hub space combining the riverside station area and local assets. It will be developed by expanding and improving the existing “Bike Lounge” (bicycle parking lot) near Sinmokdong Station, which had low utilization. Previously, the district was selected in April last year for the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s “Waterfront Vitality Hub Creation Project,” securing 3 billion KRW in city funds, and launched a design competition in February for full-scale development.
The core theme of the winning design “RECONNECT” is “connection,” focusing on ▲improving access to Anyangcheon by installing a “movable floodgate wall” to strengthen connectivity with the city ▲creating a circulatory flow structure through spatial linkage between the city-facing deck and the river-facing deck ▲overcoming the sense of disconnection between the city and the river by linking nearby park golf courses, waterfront walking trails, and bicycle paths, thereby maximizing accessibility and communication.
Additionally, the total floor area will be significantly expanded by more than 34%, from the existing 374.36㎡ to 502.94㎡, to include a 24-hour convenience store, caf?, and community center. A spacious deck (“Big Deck”) for enjoying the riverside and a “Roof Terrace” offering views of Yanghwa Waterfall across Anyangcheon will also be created.
The design also plans to install an elevator in the deck space to resolve circulation issues caused by the disconnection between the river and the city, which previously required detours from the riverside walking path up to the embankment. This will greatly improve convenience for visitors to the nearby park golf course, as well as for mobility-impaired individuals such as the elderly and disabled.
Moreover, since the building adjoins the riverside bicycle path, bicycle racks reflecting the function of the existing Bike Lounge will be placed around the area. On the second floor, shower rooms and locker rooms will be installed for cyclists and marathon runners to create a comfortable usage environment.
The judging panel stated, “This winning design minimizes slope damage through elevator placement while rationally organizing circulation, making it a highly feasible project. The spatial arrangement of the deck, caf?, and convenience store was also efficiently proposed.”
The district plans to sign a design contract with the winning architectural firm Inyou within this month, complete the design service by the end of the year, and aim to start construction next year.
Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “Since an excellent work with the motif of ‘connection’ was selected in this design competition, we will do our best to redevelop the Sinmokdong Station area into an innovative waterfront sensory space linking the city and the Anyangcheon riverside, establishing it as a representative landmark for residents’ leisure, rest, and communication.”
