An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 occurred on the 22nd in the waters near Hualien County in eastern Taiwan. This follows a strong earthquake of magnitude 7 or higher that occurred on the 3rd, and a magnitude 5.6 earthquake was also observed the previous day.
According to the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan and Yonhap News Agency, at around 5:08 PM local time, an earthquake with a Richter scale magnitude of 5.5 was observed 26.8 km south-southwest of the Hualien County Government building.
The epicenter was located at 23.76 degrees north latitude, 121.55 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 km.
The Central Weather Bureau also reported that earthquakes occurred in the nearby waters at 5:09 PM (magnitude 4.4), 5:12 PM (magnitude 5.3), 5:15 PM (magnitude 4.9), and 5:17 PM (magnitude 4.9). Five earthquakes were observed within approximately 9 minutes.
On the previous day at 10:40 AM, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake also occurred in the waters near Hualien County. The epicenter was located 55.9 km south of the Hualien County Government, with a depth of 30 km.
