The Nation's Top 3 Surfing Spots: Pohang Yonghan Beach Draws Surfers Nationwide
Pohang City will hold the 6th Pohang Meyers Cup Surfing Championship for five days from April 24 to 28.
Sponsored by Pohang City and organized by the Pohang Surfing Association, this competition will be held in 12 categories across two divisions: longboard and shortboard. The events include open and general men’s and women’s competitions, beginner men’s and women’s competitions, as well as junior elementary and middle/high school divisions. About 300 surfers from across the country are expected to enjoy the waves of Pohang and showcase their skills.
During the competition, promotional booths for selling, exchanging, and repairing surfing equipment will also be set up on site.
The surfing population has been increasing every year, estimated to have reached 1.24 million as of September last year (according to the Korea Surfing Association), and the number of people enjoying surfing at beaches such as Yonghan and Wolpo in Pohang is growing significantly.
Yonghan Beach is known for its high waves and shallow waters, making it ideal for surfing. Along with Yangyang in Gangwon Province and Busan, it is considered one of the top surfing spots frequently visited by surfing enthusiasts. Since the establishment of Yonghan Surfer Beach in 2021, surfing education and support facilities have been provided, contributing to the expansion of the surfing leisure base by attracting more people to experience and enjoy surfing.
Kim Young-jun, Director of the Marine and Port Department, stated, “With thorough preparations for the 6th Pohang Meyers Cup Surfing Championship this year, we will ensure that surfers from all over the country can safely enjoy the competition at Pohang’s beaches and create lasting memories. We will do our best to promote Pohang as one of the top three surfing destinations nationwide and contribute to the revitalization of marine leisure tourism.”
