Pohang City solidified its position as a global battery hub city by winning the Grand Prize in the ‘Battery Industry City Category’ for three consecutive years at the ‘2024 Korea Representative Brand Awards’ ceremony.
Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, is taking a commemorative photo after encouraging the employees of the Battery Advanced Industry Division who contributed to winning the grand prize in the "Battery Industry City Sector" for three consecutive years.
The ‘Korea Representative Brand’ event held on the 17th at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul is hosted by DongA.com, iMBC, and Hankyung.com, and organized by the Korea Representative Brand Awards Selection Committee and People Insight. Since 2006, consumers have directly selected companies, local governments, and public institutions with specialized brands in each category annually.
At this year’s awards ceremony, among the six local governments nominated in the battery industry city category, Pohang City achieved high scores in all four evaluation criteria: initial awareness, recognition, marketing activities, and brand preference, earning the grand prize for the third consecutive year.
Starting with EcoPro’s investment in 2017, Pohang was designated as a battery regulatory free zone in 2019, attracting related companies to Yeongilman and Blue Valley industrial complexes. Corporate investments worth 14 trillion KRW have been confirmed by 2027, leading the establishment of secondary battery infrastructure and revitalization of industrial complexes.
Based on this large-scale corporate investment, Pohang achieved the designation of ‘Advanced Strategic Industrial Complex Specialized in Secondary Batteries’ last July. Since the designation, the city has focused on promptly resolving various difficulties hindering the settlement and production activities of secondary battery companies within the Pohang industrial complex.
Pohang, home to national representative secondary battery companies such as EcoPro, the world’s No.1 cathode material producer, and POSCO Future M, which is based on 50 years of steel industry smelting technology, is emerging as a leading secondary battery city. With the specialized complex designation, the government’s active support for industrial complex infrastructure is rapidly completing the secondary battery industry ecosystem.
Furthermore, aiming to produce 1 million tons of battery cathode materials, achieve sales of 70 trillion KRW, and create 10,000 jobs by 2030, Pohang City is fully committed to realizing the vision of ‘2050 Battery Nation City Pohang’ through three major strategies: establishing a special secondary battery investment city, building a Pohang-style battery industry innovation ecosystem, and strengthening field-centered industry-academia-research governance.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “Pohang is advancing as Korea’s representative battery city by creating a solid industrial ecosystem based on excellent industrial infrastructure centered on global leading companies,” and added, “We will support timely corporate investments and create a business-friendly environment through the activation of the specialized complex, not only to realize the battery nation but also to leap forward as a global battery hub city.”
