'Fostering 3 Major Game-Changer Technologies' Ceremony Commemorating Technology, Science & ICT Day

157 Awardees Including Im Mi-hye, Honorary Researcher at Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, and Song Jae-hyuk, President of Samsung Electronics

The '2024 Science and Technology·Information and Communication Day Commemoration Ceremony' was held on the afternoon of the 22nd at the National Gwacheon Science Museum.

Hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Communications Commission, the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies, and the Korea Information and Broadcasting Communication Federation, this ceremony was held under the theme of 'Realizing a Global Science and Technology Hub and a Digital Model Nation.' Attendees included President Yoon Seok-yeol, Minister Lee Jong-ho of the Ministry of Science and ICT, Chairman Kim Hong-il of the Korea Communications Commission, Chairman Lee Tae-sik of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies, and Chairman Noh Jun-hyung of the Korea Information and Broadcasting Communication Federation.


The Ministry of Science and ICT awarded government honors to 157 individuals for their contributions to the promotion of science, technology, and information and communication, as well as for achievements in national research and development, in celebration of the 57th Science Day (April 21) and the 69th Information and Communication Day (April 22). Among the 157 awardees, 34 received orders of merit, 21 received medals, 45 received presidential citations, and 57 received prime ministerial citations.


The Order of Science and Technology Merit, Changjo Medal, was awarded to Im Mi-hye, Honorary Researcher at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, who worked for 38 years and led the R&D and commercialization of polyimide resin. The Order of Science and Technology Merit, Innovation Medal, was awarded to 26 individuals including Song Jae-hyuk, President of Samsung Electronics, who led the development of the world's first V-NAND memory semiconductor. The Hwangjo Geunjeong Medal was awarded to Professor Lee Hee-jung of Korea University for contributions to information and communication technology (ICT) policy, and the Bronze Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit was awarded to five individuals including Choi Jeong-sik, CEO of The B.N., who contributed to the realization of a safe digital society through initiatives such as launching the country's first security media.


At the event, lectures were also held on the government's three major game changer technologies: artificial intelligence (AI)·semiconductors, advanced bio, and quantum fields. Professor Ahn Jeong-ho of Seoul National University presented on artificial intelligence (AI), Professor Son Young-ik of KAIST spoke on quantum, and Professor Go Ah-ra of POSTECH shared visions and directions for the advanced bio field.


Minister Lee said, “I sincerely congratulate all the awardees who have greatly contributed to the development of science, technology, and information and communication in the Republic of Korea,” adding, “The government will spare no effort or support to build an innovation environment centered on science and technology, where science and technology and information and communication professionals are socially respected and can stably pursue research and development and technological innovation activities.”
