Naju City in Jeollanam-do has been selected for the "National Heritage Landscape Improvement" project announced by the Cultural Heritage Administration.
According to the city on the 22nd, this project supports the improvement of deteriorated residential infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for village residents living in designated national heritage areas.
It focuses on establishing a national heritage protection system that coexists and thrives with residents, moving away from the existing budget support centered on national heritage repair and maintenance and regulation-focused policies.
The Cultural Heritage Administration selected five regions, including Naju City, through document screening and on-site inspections among 13 local governments nationwide.
In the first year of the project, which is this year, Naju City plans to conduct a service to establish standards for residential environment improvement by receiving 100 million KRW in national funding as a preparation stage for efficient project implementation.
Based on the results of the service, the city will request the project budget from the Cultural Heritage Administration and plans to actively improve the residential environment of villages around national heritage sites starting next year.
The city is planning to improve the walking environment by repairing old walls in the fortress town area and the alleys of the original downtown area, where national heritage sites are concentrated, and by undergrounding power lines, as well as creating historical landscapes that harmonize with the national heritage.
It will also promote lifestyle and cultural landscape improvement projects such as park infrastructure improvement, signboard maintenance, and development utilizing idle spaces.
Mayor Yoon Byung-tae said, "Through this project, we hope that residents who have faced many restrictions due to national heritage can now enjoy an enriched quality of life thanks to the national heritage and contribute to regional development."
