Yangcheon Marathon Couple Run · Family Run Draws 4,500 Participants

Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that over 4,500 participants have completed registration for the “13th Yangcheon Marathon,” which will be held on the 27th, running from Anyangcheon to the Han River.

This year’s event reflects last year’s high participation of families and couples by adding event courses such as the '10km Couple Run' and '5km Family Run' to the existing half marathon, 10km, and 5km courses, making a total of five categories. Especially, as the marathon route has been extended to the Han River, registration closed early within about a month, drawing great interest.

Looking at the registration status by course: ▲ Half marathon toward the Han River ? 698 participants, 10km ? 1,702 participants (general 1,412 · Couple Run 290) ▲ 5km toward Guro ? 2,082 participants (general 1,399 · Family Run 683).

By age group, those in their 30s and 40s accounted for 50.7% (2,273 participants), demonstrating the rising popularity of marathon as a mainstream sport. Middle-aged and senior marathoners in their 50s and 60s made up 23% (1,028 participants), followed by participants in their 20s at 12% (572 participants). Seniors in their 70s and 80s also registered 88 participants, showing the strength of the elderly demographic.

Additionally, with the introduction of the Couple Run and Family Run, preschool children and teenagers accounted for 11% (521 participants), which is notable.

The oldest participant is an 84-year-old senior, and the youngest is a 2-year-old toddler. Five foreign participants have also registered. This marathon is expected to be a venue of harmony where all generations can experience healthy vitality.

By region, 3,575 participants are from Seoul, and 907 are from other cities and districts. Participants have registered from all over the country, including nearby Gyeonggi and Incheon, as well as Gangwon, Chungcheong, Jeolla, Daejeon, and Busan, confirming the nationwide status of the Yangcheon Marathon.

In particular, the district has specially produced a ‘4-piece medal’ to strengthen the symbolism unique to the Yangcheon Marathon and encourage continuous participation. If participants complete the Yangcheon Marathon for four consecutive years from this year to 2027 and collect all four medal pieces, they will form the shape of the Yangcheon-gu map. The district plans to present a medal case to finishers who collect all four medals at the 16th Yangcheon Marathon in 2027.

On the day of the event, before the official start at 7:30 a.m., former athlete and broadcaster Lee Bong-ju, appointed as the ambassador for this Yangcheon Marathon, along with Yang Jun-hyuk and Lee Hyung-taek, will participate in a ‘special fan signing event’ to interact with participants and encourage marathon completion.

Moreover, various souvenirs such as mood lights, snack sets, and functional T-shirts are prepared for participants. In addition to course-specific and event awards ceremonies, there will be various side events including photo booths, congratulatory performances, and experience booths from related organizations.

Ahead of the full-scale event, the district will conduct a joint pre-inspection of each section with the Yangcheon Police Station and Yangcheon Fire Station the day before the event. On the day of the event, about 300 personnel including event staff and medical personnel will be deployed throughout the site, along with an emergency rescue team called the ‘Race · Bicycle Safety Patrol’ who will run alongside participants to provide emergency care, ensuring thorough safety management.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “Since the 13th Yangcheon Marathon is a large-scale event with about 4,000 participants from across the country, we will prepare meticulously and thoroughly until the very end to ensure that all participants can unite and communicate in the spirit of sportsmanship.”
