AI International Standardization Conference Held in Seoul
AI experts from around the world are gathering in Korea to develop international AI standards.
The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will host the ‘AI International Standardization General Assembly (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC42)’ from the 22nd to the 26th at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul. Over 270 AI experts from more than 40 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan, as well as specialists from companies such as Google, Microsoft (MS), Nvidia, and Samsung Electronics, will participate in this event jointly organized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
During the assembly, international standards development will focus on key industry issues such as ▲ethical concerns of generative AI ▲AI reliability evaluation ▲AI maturity models assessing the capabilities of AI system development organizations ▲AI management system guidelines. Additionally, experts from seven Southeast Asian countries with high interest in AI, including Thailand and Cambodia, will participate for the first time to experience the AI standardization process.
AI is a game-changing technology that will reshape the future industrial landscape. Korea is concentrating national capabilities to secure a leading position in the global AI semiconductor market and to drive a digital transformation across industries. The National Institute of Technology and Standards plans to propose the establishment of a standardization advisory group (AG) to support the expansion of AI applications across all industries at this international meeting, as well as to propose two new international standards including an AI ethics checklist and an AI maturity model.
Jung In-kyo, Director General of the Trade Negotiation Headquarters, stated in his welcoming address at the assembly, "As AI accelerates innovation across all industrial sectors, standards are emerging as a key implementation tool in the AI era, contributing not only to ensuring AI safety and reliability but also to removing trade barriers between countries and promoting industrialization." He added, "Based on Korea’s advantages as an industrial powerhouse with global competitiveness in semiconductors and information and communication technology (ICT), we will take a leading role in establishing international standards in the AI field."
Meanwhile, related public events will be held consecutively: an ‘AI Standards Open Workshop’ at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the 24th, and an online ‘Korea-UK AI for All Forum’ on the 2nd of next month.
