Yeosu City, Writing Poems on 'Islands of Yeosu' with Poet Choi Hyangran

Poetry Creation Lectures, Workshops, Peer Reviews, and Poetry Recital Concerts

Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it will operate a program called "An Island Comes Between Poetry and Me," where participants write poems on the theme of "Islands of Yeosu" together with poet Choi Hyang-ran.

"An Island Comes Between Poetry and Me" is part of the "2024 Visiting Local Writers Literary Lecture," operated by the Jeollanam-do Provincial Library in collaboration with local writers from cities and counties.

The program will be held at the Yeosu Yi Sun-sin Library from May 9 to June 20, every Thursday at 10 a.m., for a total of six sessions.

Participants will learn to change the perception that poetry is difficult and exclusive to poets, discovering that anyone can easily create poetry, and will have time to feel the beauty of Yeosu through poetry.

In particular, the final session will feature a poetry recital concert where participants will present their original poems inspired by the islands of Yeosu.

Any Yeosu citizen wishing to participate can apply starting from the 22nd through the cultural program section on the municipal library’s website. The number of participants is limited to 15 and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Poet Choi Hyang-ran is one of the representative local writers active in Yeosu, with major works including the poetry collection Outside Rain, Inside Moon and the co-authored poetry collection Dyed in the Taste of Yeosu.

A library official said, "We have prepared a time to build literary knowledge through an opportunity for communication between the library, citizens, and writers via literature," adding, "We hope for much interest in the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo through poetry writing themed on the islands of Yeosu."

Meanwhile, last year’s program "More Beautiful Than Flowers, In the Mood for Love," operated with poet Shin Byung-eun, saw participation from 75 Yeosu citizens.
