Operation from 22nd to 28th, Nationwide 10-Minute Lights Out Event on 22nd
Campaign for Practicing Sustainable Carbon Neutral Living in Daily Life
Pohang City will operate the ‘16th Climate Change Week’ from April 22 to 28 to promote the practice of carbon-neutral living in celebration of the 54th Earth Day (April 22).
This year’s Earth Day slogan is ‘Our Carbon-Neutral Living Practice is Actually Great!’
This means that while practicing carbon neutrality may be inconvenient, it positively impacts the planet and offers various benefits. Pohang City will hold diverse events to raise awareness of this necessity among citizens and create a Climate Change Week that everyone can participate in together.
First, a ‘National Lights Out Event’ will be held for 10 minutes from 8 p.m. on Earth Day, April 22. Pohang City plans to turn off the landscape lighting of public institution buildings, including the City Hall and Hwanho Park Space Walk, as well as major city landmarks.
Additionally, about 100 people including members of the Pohang Sustainable Development Council, the Pohang branch of the Nature Love Federation, and public officials will carry out a campaign to normalize carbon-neutral living practices on April 22.
Along with this, the Pohang Climate Change Education Center will hold a campaign on school commuting routes for elementary, middle, and high school students (April 22) and a climate change photo exhibition (April 15?26). The Pohang Environmental School will also conduct educational programs on practical actions for the Earth (April 22?27) and promote campaigns to encourage carbon-neutral living practices.
Kim Kyung-woon, Director of the Environmental Policy Division, said, “I hope this will be a time for citizens to join in sustainable carbon-neutral practices in daily life, such as saving energy and using reusable containers, and to reflect once again on the Earth we live on.”
Earth Day began on April 22, 1970, as a commemoration to protect the Earth’s environment, triggered by an offshore oil spill accident in California, USA, in 1969. In South Korea, Climate Change Week has been held around Earth Day since 2009.
