NST Appoints New Directors for Korea Institute of Materials Science and Korea Institute of Fusion Energy

The National Research Council of Science & Technology (Chairman Kim Bok-cheol) announced on the 19th at the 211th Extraordinary Board Meeting that Choi Cheol-jin, Principal Researcher at the Korea Institute of Materials Science, and Oh Young-guk, Principal Researcher at the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy, were respectively appointed as the Directors of the Korea Institute of Materials Science and the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy.

Choi Cheol-jin, the newly appointed Director of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, earned a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Seoul National University in 1984, a Master’s degree in Materials Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 1986, and a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering in 1997. After joining the Korea Institute of Materials Science in 1986, he served as Head of the Powder/Ceramics Research Division and Director of the Nano Convergence Materials Center. He has also held positions such as Vice President of the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, Chair of the Mechanical and Materials Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Advisory Council, and Director of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies.

Oh Young-guk, the newly appointed Director of the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy, obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Seoul National University in 1989, a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1991, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering in 1999. After joining the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy in 2005, he served as Head of the Fusion Engineering Research Division and Deputy Director. He has also held roles such as Head of ITER Device Operation Division, Chair of the IEA FPCC Continuous Operation Coordination Group, Director of the Korean Society of Superconductivity and Cryogenics, and Korean Representative to the IAEA FEC Preparatory Committee.
