Geumcheon-gu Expands Compensation Insurance Support Up to 50 Million KRW for Electric Wheelchair Accidents

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that starting April 20, it will expand insurance coverage for electric wheelchairs and electric scooters for people with disabilities, the elderly, and national veterans.

Electric mobility aids such as electric wheelchairs and electric scooters are classified as "pedestrians" rather than "vehicles" under the Road Traffic Act, so they must be used on sidewalks. When an accident occurs involving a third party while a person with a disability is riding an electric mobility aid, the user is fully liable, making insurance support essential.

Geumcheon-gu supports the "insurance enrollment for electric mobility aids" to guarantee mobility rights for people with disabilities, the elderly, and national veterans. From this year, the coverage limit has been significantly increased from 20 million KRW to 50 million KRW.

Additionally, the co-payment has been changed from 50,000 KRW to full coverage, allowing users to utilize electric mobility aids without financial burden.

The support targets residents of Geumcheon-gu who are people with disabilities, seniors aged 65 or older, or national veterans using electric mobility aids. Enrollment is automatic without any separate procedures, and in case of an accident causing bodily injury or property damage to others during the operation of the electric mobility aid, compensation of up to 50 million KRW per accident is provided.

Claims can be made by contacting the insurance company call center (wheelchairkorea.com) within three years of the accident.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, "We hope that by supporting insurance for electric mobility aids, we can reduce the economic burden on users and guarantee their mobility rights," adding, "We will continue to implement various welfare policies for socially vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities and the elderly."
