Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it will expand the installation of closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) and logo projectors (notification lights projecting messages on the ground) in areas with habitual illegal dumping to create a clean city free of unauthorized waste disposal.
Seongdong-gu currently operates 225 CCTVs and 83 logo projectors in vulnerable areas where habitual illegal dumping occurs, and is increasing the number annually to prevent and crack down on illegal waste dumping.
This year, in June, the district plans to install an additional 9 CCTVs and 3 logo projectors at 5 locations within the area to strengthen prevention and enforcement against illegal dumping and promote proper waste disposal methods, dedicating efforts to creating a more pleasant city.
The installation sites were selected mainly in vulnerable illegal dumping areas by actively reflecting residents' demands.
The CCTVs are equipped with real-time recording as well as sensor-detection automatic recording functions, enabling 24-hour monitoring without blind spots. When illegal dumping is detected, an automatic warning broadcast is simultaneously transmitted, which greatly helps in educating residents. Additionally, the footage can be used as evidence for enforcement, contributing significantly to maintaining road cleanliness.
The logo projectors repeatedly display LED-lit messages and images on the ground to prevent illegal dumping, raising awareness and also providing crime prevention effects on dark streets at night, resulting in high resident satisfaction.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Dumping trash out of selfishness, thinking only about keeping my surroundings clean, negatively affects my neighbors' living environment, and the damage can come back to me. Therefore, I ask for active participation in improving illegal dumping.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to create a clean and livable residential environment.”
