Damage Occurs in Facility Horticulture Crops Due to Poor Pollination and Fruit Set
Gohung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced that it will receive disaster compensation for 60.7ha of facility horticultural crops damaged due to insufficient sunlight.
From December last year to February this year, Jeollanam-do experienced frequent rainfall and cloudy weather, resulting in about a 25% decrease in sunlight compared to the average year, causing damage such as poor pollination and fruit setting in facility horticultural crops like strawberries.
Accordingly, Gohung-gun and Jeonnam Province repeatedly requested the government to recognize the disaster since February, and it was acknowledged as an agricultural disaster. This is the second time since 2010 that insufficient sunlight has been recognized as an agricultural disaster.
Following the recognition of insufficient sunlight as an agricultural disaster, Gohung-gun conducted a damage survey on facility horticultural crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, and cucumbers grown by farmers in 16 eup and myeon areas over four weeks from March 20 to April 12.
The scale of crop damage due to insufficient sunlight in Gohung-gun is 60.7ha across 183 farms, including cucumbers on 34.7ha by 117 farms, tomatoes on 17.1ha by 41 farms, strawberries on 8.6ha by 24 farms, and other crops on 0.3ha by 1 farm. The restoration cost is expected to be 175.78 million KRW.
A county official stated, “With the completion of the damage survey on facility horticultural crops, the government plans to promptly provide disaster relief funds based on these results to help stabilize the management of affected farms.”
