Pohang City Eliminates Energy Welfare Blind Spots! ... Full Effort for Citizen-Centered Energy Welfare Pohang City Hall.

The ceremony was attended by Mayor Lee Kang-deok, National Assembly member Kim Jeong-jae, Vice Chairman of the City Council Kim Il-man, Vice Chairman of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council Park Yong-seon, representatives from Yeongnam Energy Service, Korea LPG Business Management Institute, Korea Gas Safety Corporation, local city and provincial council members, and residents, who celebrated the completion of the energy welfare project.

Before the ceremony, performances were held by the Cheongha Pungmul troupe and the Heunghae Gogojanggu team, and after the event, key attendees visited households with LPG installations to listen to the opinions of residents who actually use the facilities.

The city gas supply project for areas without city gas began in 2019 and continued until 2021, investing 8.03 billion KRW in the Guryongpo area to complete 21 km of main and supply pipelines. In 2022, 2.5 billion KRW was invested to complete 6 km of supply pipelines in six areas including Doguri and Yakjeon-ri in Donghae-myeon, and Taekjeon 2-ri in Yeonil-eup.

Last year, 2.3 billion KRW was invested to complete 5.5 km of supply pipelines in five areas including Jungdan-ri in Yeonil-eup, Seok-ri in Donghae-myeon, Won 1-ri and Gujeong 1-ri in Ocheon-eup, and Samjeong 1-ri in Guryongpo-eup, with completion scheduled for this year.

The LPG pipeline network construction project, from 2020 to 2023, invested a total of 30.7 billion KRW to complete projects in 36 rural fishing villages without city gas, covering 2,445 households.

Among these, in 2023, 12.7 billion KRW was invested to complete the project this year in 13 villages including Deokseong-ri in Cheongha-myeon, Sangok 1-ri in Jukjang-myeon, and Daebo 3-ri in Homigot-myeon, covering 1,006 households.

The city completed this project by holding resident briefings, resolving civil complaints such as administrative procedures for various permits, site selection, and private land consent, and after technical review by the Korea Gas Safety Corporation, installing supply facilities such as small storage tanks, gas pipelines, boilers, city gas supply pipelines, and pressure regulators.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “Through the energy welfare project, we expect to reduce the fuel cost burden for residents in underserved areas and resolve inconveniences in cooking and heating, thereby improving quality of life. We will continue to expand energy welfare projects and realize Pohang as a specialized energy city through designation of a hydrogen specialized complex and securing a distributed energy specialized area, leading the future clean energy transition.”

Pohang City plans to focus administrative efforts to ensure that 99% of the entire region, including urban and rural fishing areas, can enjoy energy welfare benefits within 10 years, aiming to resolve energy imbalances between urban and rural areas.
