Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gu Bok-gyu) announced on the 18th that the ‘117th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of Ssangsan Uisoo Uprising’ was held at Ssangsan Uisa (雙山義祠) in Jeungdong Village, Jeung-ri, Iyang-myeon at 10 a.m. on the 17th.
Jungdong Village is home to Ssangsan, a representative site of Korean anti-Japanese militia.
The memorial ceremony, conducted by the Ssangsan Uisoo Anti-Japanese Militia Bereaved Families Association (Representative Yang Geum-yeol) and organized by the Ssangsan Anti-Japanese Militia Commemoration Committee (Chairman Jeong Chan-bo), was solemnly held with about 100 attendees including bereaved families and local residents.
In particular, this event was meaningful as faculty and students from Iyang High School (Principal Park Seong-wook) in the region participated, making it a valuable field education site for patriotism.
Hwasun-gun plans to continue utilizing Ssangsan Uisoo as a foundation for patriotism and as a field education site, as well as actively support the restoration of honor for the ancestor militias who participated in the Ssangsan militia.
Meanwhile, the Ssangsan Anti-Japanese Militia historic site was designated as a national heritage site on August 3, 2007. It is a representative late Joseon militia site in Korea, preserving traces such as weapon manufacturing facilities that allow inference of militia activities at the time.
