Jeju Firefighting Helicopter's Brain-Dead Organ Transport Operation... Protecting Precious Lives

Precious lives were saved through a brain-dead organ transport operation using a Jeju firefighting helicopter.

According to the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters on the 18th, it was recently revealed through the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters website and the National Petition that organs extracted from a brain-dead donor on the 31st of last month were safely transported from Jeju to a hospital located in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do, via a firefighting helicopter, thereby saving precious lives.

A person identified as an organ transplant coordinator, Mr. A, stated in a post, “The organ transplant almost could not take place because the Jeju flight was fully booked, but thanks to Mr. Kim Beom-su, the Jeju firefighting helicopter flight operations manager, who worked hard, the transport was safely completed and the transplant surgery was successfully finished.”

He added, “The kind and courteous procedural guidance from the Jeju firefighters, the prompt response from Jeju Airport Immigration Office, and the unified efforts under the command of the Fire Agency Aviation Operations Control Room to ensure the transport icebox containing the organs arrived safely in Seoul was truly moving.”

At that time, upon receiving a request for organ transport support from the National Organ, Tissue and Blood Management Service, firefighter Kim Beom-su, in charge of firefighting helicopter flight operations at the 119 Comprehensive Situation Room, quickly dispatched the firefighting helicopter and coordinated the flight schedule based on close cooperation with Jeju Airport and the 119 Aviation Unit.

Since the rapid transport of organs extracted from the brain-dead donor was a critical factor for the success of the transplant surgery, the 119 aviation team, with a single-minded determination to save precious lives, safely delivered the donated organs to the transplant team at Bucheon St. Mary’s Hospital after about two hours of flight.

Thanks to the hard work of the firefighting officers and the efforts of the medical staff, all recipients are currently reported to have successfully completed their transplant surgeries and are regaining their health.

Head of Headquarters Go Min-ja said, “We promise to continue to be a reliable pillar in protecting the lives of the people.”
