Daejeon City announced that it will implement an ozone warning system from the 15th to October 15th, as the concentration of ozone (O3) in the atmosphere is expected to rise due to the increase in temperature during the summer season.
An ozone warning is issued when the 1-hour average concentration reaches 0.12 ppm or higher for an advisory, 0.3 ppm or higher for a warning, and 0.5 ppm or higher for a severe warning.
The city will operate a warning situation room with the city government, the Health and Environment Research Institute, and autonomous districts. If the ozone concentration exceeds the standard, Daejeon will be divided into two zones?East (Dong-gu, Jung-gu, Daedeok-gu) and West (Seo-gu, Yuseong-gu)?to issue ozone warnings accordingly.
When a warning is issued, the situation will be communicated via fax and text messages to related organizations such as media outlets and schools, as well as to subscribers of the air pollution warning text message service. Additionally, warnings will be announced using SNS and air quality electronic display boards.
So far, ozone advisories have been issued once each in 2017 and 2018 in Daejeon, but none have been issued since 2019.
Park Dohyun, Director of the Environmental Greenery Bureau of Daejeon City, stated, “Exposure to high concentrations of ozone can cause eye and throat irritation, and in severe cases, may adversely affect health by reducing lung function. When advisories or warnings are issued, we ask people to refrain from outdoor activities and, if going out is unavoidable, to use public transportation as much as possible.”
