Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that it will hold the ‘Y Education Expo 2024 National Youth Competition’ on May 18 to allow young people to become familiar with artificial intelligence (AI) and drone technology, key fields of the 4th Industrial Revolution, in their daily lives.
First, to nurture global talents with critical acceptance skills of future technologies as well as creativity and logical thinking, the district is jointly hosting the ‘2nd ChatGPT English Speech Contest’ with the Korean Educational Broadcasting System (EBS). At last year’s Y Education Expo, the first-ever nationwide competition combining English speaking and generative AI was held, attracting 219 youths nationwide who competed fiercely.
Especially this year, to encourage more participation, the total prize money has been increased to 8 million KRW. The contest is open to youths residing in Korea who are interested in English speaking and ChatGPT, divided into middle school division (born 2009?2011) and high school division (born 2005?2007), and will be held as an individual competition. Students wishing to participate can apply online through the official website of ‘Y Education Expo 2024’ by 6 PM on the 29th of this month.
After applying, participants must choose one of the preliminary topics: ▲Pros and cons of introducing digital textbooks ▲Creative solutions to social problems using artificial intelligence (AI) technology ▲One effort the local community should make to realize a carbon-neutral society. They then write an English manuscript using ChatGPT and submit it along with a video of themselves delivering a speech in English within 3 minutes via email.
A total of 20 participants (10 from the middle school division and 10 from the high school division) who pass the preliminaries will compete in the finals held at the district office’s Digital Media Center on May 18. The final topics will be revealed on the day of the competition, and finalists will write their manuscripts on the spot using ChatGPT before delivering their final English speeches.
Winners in both middle and high school divisions will receive awards as follows: ▲Grand Prize (EBS President’s Award) 1 person with 1 million KRW ▲Excellence Award (Seoul Mayor’s Award) 1 person with 600,000 KRW ▲Merit Award (Yangcheon-gu Mayor’s Award) 8 people with 300,000 KRW each. All 20 finalists will receive certificates and a total of 8 million KRW in prize money.
Additionally, on the same day, the district will hold the ‘2nd National Youth Drone Soccer Competition’ at Yangcheon Park Drone Stadium. Drone soccer is a new concept leisure sport that combines information and communication technology (ICT), where teams of five players directly control drone soccer balls to score goals.
The competition is open to elementary and middle school drone soccer teams nationwide, and 24 teams will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis through the ‘Y Education Expo 2024’ website by the 30th of this month. However, mixed teams of elementary and middle school students are not allowed, and middle school teams must be from a single school or public institution.
The matches will be conducted with three sets each in the preliminary league and final tournament, with wins and losses decided by set scores. All matches will follow the ‘Youth Game Rules’ of the Korea Drone Soccer Association.
During the ‘Y Education Expo 2024 Closing Ceremony,’ awards will be presented as follows: ▲Grand Prize (Seoul Mayor’s Award) 1 team with 1.5 million KRW ▲Gold Prize (Yangcheon-gu Mayor’s Award) 1 team with 1 million KRW ▲Silver Prize (Yangcheon-gu Mayor’s Award) 1 team with 500,000 KRW ▲Bronze Prize (Yangcheon-gu Mayor’s Award) 1 team with 300,000 KRW ▲Encouragement Prize (Korea Drone Soccer Association Award) 4 teams totaling 400,000 KRW ▲Participation Prize (Korea Drone Soccer Association Yangcheon-gu Youth Branch Chief Award) 16 teams with designated products. A total of 24 teams will receive certificates and prizes worth approximately 4.5 million KRW. The Grand Prize, Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners will also receive trophies.
Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We have prepared the ‘Y Education Expo 2024 National Competition’ so that our youth, who will live in the era of digital transformation, can develop self-directed skills in generative AI and drone technology deeply rooted in daily life. We hope for much interest and participation, and that this competition will become a learning ground where they can grow into global talents leading the 4th Industrial Revolution era.”
