Securing Life and Safety through Preemptive Measures... Yeongdeungpo-gu Conducts Inspection and Training of Yukgapmun for Flood and Wind Disaster Preparedness

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced on the 18th that it will conduct opening and closing drills and pre-operation inspections of the floodgates installed around the Han River to prepare for heavy summer rains.

The floodgates usually serve as roads or sidewalks connecting Han River parks, but in the event of Han River flooding, they function to block water from rushing into the urban area.

The district will carry out floodgate opening and closing drills to protect residents' safety from summer typhoons and heavy rains. The drills will be conducted sequentially from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 18th at the floodgates of Nodul-gil Entrance, Dangsan Entrance, Yeouido Entrance, and Yangpyeong Entrance. The drills will proceed in the order of on-site dispatch for flood situations, control of vehicle and pedestrian traffic, closure and opening of the floodgates, and resumption of traffic.

The pre-inspection of operational status aims to proactively respond to sudden weather anomalies or flood disasters.

Through the pre-drill, the district will also check the operation of the sluice gates and winches (sluice gate operating machines), the accumulation of soil and foreign substances on the sluice gates and frames, and the condition of water level gauges and guide signs.

Since the drills simulate a Han River flood caused by heavy rain, all vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be completely blocked during the exercise. The district will minimize inconvenience to residents by cooperating with related organizations such as the police station and traffic broadcasting to provide information on traffic restriction times and detour routes.

Meanwhile, the district regularly patrols around the floodgates to inspect for obstacles that may hinder the smooth flow of water in the river even during normal times.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Our top priority is to protect the lives and property of residents through proactive disaster management against natural disasters such as typhoons and heavy rains,” and added, “We will thoroughly inspect all areas to create a ‘Safe City Yeongdeungpo’ so that residents can spend this summer with peace of mind and comfort.”
