Jeong Cha-soon (91), the mother of the late martyr Park Jong-cheol, whose death sparked the June Democratic Uprising, passed away on the morning of the 17th.

According to the bereaved family, Jeong passed away at a nursing hospital located in Gangdong-gu, Seoul. The funeral hall has been set up at Seoul Gangdong Sacred Heart Hospital.
Jeong was the mother of Park Jong-cheol, who died in January 1987 after being tortured by the police. Park Jong-cheol, who was a student in the Department of Linguistics at Seoul National University, was taken by the police investigating key suspects related to the Seoul National University Democracy Promotion Committee case and was tortured. His death led to the June Democratic Uprising on June 10 of the same year.
Park Jong-cheol’s father, Park Jeong-gi, passed away in 2018 at the age of 89.
