On the 17th, the Dokdo Museum in Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk announced that it has purchased 43 items and 64 artifacts related to Ulleungdo and Dokdo.
Ulleung-gun announced a public notice for artifact purchases starting from January 15, and during this process, conducted artifact appraisals and price evaluation committees to make the final selections for the submitted artifacts.
The artifacts purchased this time include maps made in Japan that indicate Dokdo as Korean territory, as well as materials related to the local history of Ulleungdo that provide insight into daily life.
Among the purchased artifacts, representative maps made in Japan that indicate Dokdo as Korean territory include 31 items such as Gangho Daejeol Yonghae Naejang Sang·Ha, Shin Ilbon Jogamdo Yukji Cheongnyeongbu, and Meiji Dai Nippon Chiken Shinseido. Among these, Gangho Daejeol Yonghae Naejang Sang·Ha is a Japanese encyclopedia created during the Edo period, which labels Dokdo as Jasan-do (子山島) and clearly marks it as Joseon territory.
Regarding the daily life materials of Ulleungdo, there are 12 items including Materials of Choi Byung-kwon, 3rd and 4th Ulleungdo District National Assembly Member, UNESCO KOREAN SURVEY, and Phone cards related to Ulleungdo and Dokdo. Among these, the UNESCO KOREAN SURVEY clearly marks Ulleungdo and Dokdo as Korean territory on the map and also includes photographic materials. This is an important document showing that UNESCO recognized Ulleungdo and Dokdo as Korean territory in 1960.
Nam Han-kwon, the mayor of Ulleung-gun, said, “We will continue to acquire artifacts not only to clarify the local history of Ulleungdo but also to collect materials that can prove Dokdo is Korean territory, and we will strive to strengthen the sovereignty over Dokdo.”
