KOSPI, Strong Net Selling by Institutions and Foreigners... Falls Below 2600 Level On the 17th, the status board in the dealing room at the Hana Bank headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, displayed the KOSPI, KOSDAQ indices, and the KRW/USD exchange rate. On that day, the KOSPI opened at 619.15, up 9.52 points (0.36%) from the previous session, and the KOSDAQ index started at 839.3, rising 6.49 points (0.78%) from the previous trading day. The KOSPI index fell below the 2600 mark, pressured by strong net selling from institutions and foreigners.


On the 17th, the KOSPI index closed at 2584.18, down 25.45 points (0.98%) from the previous day. Trading volume was 405.1 million shares, and the trading value was tentatively estimated at 9.5141 trillion won.


The KOSPI index started the day in a slightly firm range, showing an upward trend due to bargain hunting following the sharp drop the previous day. However, during the session, net selling by institutions and foreigners poured in, reversing the gains and pushing the index below the 2600 level.


By investor type, institutions and foreigners net sold 202.2 billion won and 183.4 billion won respectively, while individuals net bought 361.7 billion won. Program trading saw net selling of 147.2 billion won in arbitrage trading and 108.6 billion won in non-arbitrage trading.


Most sectors declined. The electric and gas sector fell 2.98%, machinery -2.24%, distribution -1.69%, steel and metals -1.55%, finance -1.32%, transportation equipment -1.31%, insurance -1.28%, construction -1.11%, and electrical and electronics -0.94%. In contrast, the textile and apparel sector rose 2.62%, and medical precision and transportation warehousing sectors also closed strong.


Most of the top market capitalization stocks also declined. Samsung Electronics dropped 1.38%, SK Hynix -0.22%, LG Energy Solution -0.41%, Samsung Biologics -1.15%, Hyundai Motor -3.51%, Kia -1.39%, Celltrion -0.58%, and POSCO Holdings -2.5%. Meanwhile, NAVER closed slightly up by 0.06%.


The KOSDAQ index recorded a slightly firm trend. On the day, the KOSDAQ index closed at 833.03, up 0.22 points (0.03%) from the previous day. By investor type, institutions net bought 94.6 billion won, while foreigners and individuals net sold 31.4 billion won and 56.0 billion won respectively.


Top market capitalization stocks showed mixed movements. EcoPro BM fell 2.49%, HLB -2.0%, Alteogen -4.46%, Enchem -9.19%, Celltrion Pharm -2.44%, and EO Technics -1.61%. On the other hand, Rino Industrial rose 1.91%, HPSP 3.41%, and Rainbow Robotics 1.03% closed strong.


Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate closed at 1386.8 won, down 7.7 won from the previous day.
