235 Billion KRW Invested in Existing 4.6km Section of Ulsan Port
Activation of Taehwagang National Garden and Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Special Zone
The urban section between Taehwagang Station and Jangsaengpo (Ulsan Port Station) in Ulsan will be connected by the world's first hydrogen tram.
On the 17th, Ulsan City announced that it will promote the "Hydrogen Tram Operation Project" connecting the area around Taehwagang Station, the planned site for the '2028 International Garden Expo' and a world-class park golf course, with the Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Special Zone.
With a total project cost of 23.5 billion KRW, stations will be installed at both Taehwagang Station and Jangsaengpo (Ulsan Port Station), and the existing 4.6 km section of the Ulsan Port Line (Taehwagang Station to Ulsan Port Station) will be refurbished and connected.
Ulsan Mayor Kim Du-gyeom is giving an on-site briefing on the operation of the hydrogen tram between Taehwagang Station and Jangsaengpo on the 17th.
Ulsan City plans to complete construction by the end of 2027 after establishing a basic plan and detailed design once discussions with related organizations such as the Korea Rail Network Authority regarding track utilization are concluded.
Upon completion of this project, visitors will be able to tour the Ulsan International Garden Expo site located opposite Taehwagang Station and travel to Ulsan Port Station by hydrogen tram, then take a shuttle bus from Ulsan Port Station to the Jangsaengpo Whale Special Zone to enjoy sightseeing.
A catenary-free hydrogen tram (3 cars, 1 unit) with a capacity of 200 passengers will be deployed on this section.
An official from Ulsan City stated that commercializing the world's first catenary-free hydrogen tram, which emits 200 tons of clean air annually, will be a great opportunity to promote Ulsan's image as an eco-friendly hydrogen city to domestic and international visitors attending the expo.
In particular, the environmental rebirth achieved through the creation of a world-class park golf course at the Samsan and Yeocheon landfills and improved accessibility to the Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Special Zone are expected to significantly increase the number of tourists visiting these areas.
Kim Doo-gyeom, Mayor of Ulsan, said, “The ‘Hydrogen Tram Operation Project’ connecting Taehwagang Station and Jangsaengpo is a new challenge for Ulsan’s sustainable development,” adding, “We will transform the area around Taehwagang Station, which is changing from a former landfill to the International Garden Expo site, into the hub of the hydrogen tram and promote Ulsan as an ecological and cultural city beyond an industrial city to the world.”
