Earth Day Ceremony at City Hall on the 20th... Naebang-ro Area Designated as 'Car-Free Street'
Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kang Gi-jung) announced on the 17th that it will operate the "16th Climate Change Week" from the 22nd to the 28th in celebration of the "54th Earth Day (April 22)."
Climate Change Week is held annually to raise citizens' awareness of the climate crisis and encourage active participation in climate action. During this period, blackout events involving Gwangju City, autonomous districts, related organizations, and citizens, as well as individual events and promotional campaigns by various institutions and groups, will take place.
First, an Earth Day commemorative ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on the 20th in front of City Hall. The ceremony will be conducted with about 1,000 attendees from 34 organizations, related institutions, and citizens, featuring pre-ceremony performances, a report on Earth Day progress, and performances.
In the afternoon, various side events such as ▲bicycle parade ▲children’s drawing contest ▲reviving wooden cooking utensils ▲plastic escape room ▲making your own handkerchief ▲upcycled shirt postcard making will be held.
Also, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., a section of about 370 meters from the intersection in front of City Hall (Registry Office) to the intersection in front of the Bank of Korea will be operated as a "car-free street."
At 8 p.m. on the 22nd, a nationwide blackout event will be held simultaneously for 10 minutes. In the Gwangju area, public institutions such as City Hall and district offices, as well as about 100 apartment complexes, will participate.
Individual events by institutions and groups include ▲Gwangju Seo-gu’s "Visiting Admiring Seo-gu Environmental School" (22nd?28th) ▲Gwangju Buk-gu’s "Children’s Ramsar Wetland Exploration Team" (22nd?24th) ▲Gwangju Urban Corporation’s "Climate Crisis Environmental Film Festival" (23rd?24th) ▲Gwangju Climate Energy Promotion Agency’s "Climate Change Week Environmental Education," among others.
Son In-gyu, head of the Climate and Air Policy Division, said, “On Earth Day, I hope everyone reflects on the preciousness of the Earth and participates in small daily actions to protect it. We ask for the active participation of many citizens in the commemorative and blackout events to protect the Earth.”
