Changwon Special City Launches Full-Scale Digital Transformation of Changwon National Industrial Complex

Ministry of Science and ICT Selected for 'Global Manufacturing Convergence
SW Development and Demonstration' Project

Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam has been finally selected as the project site for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s ‘Global Manufacturing Convergence SW Development and Demonstration’ contest.

Changwon Special City Launches Full-Scale Digital Transformation of Changwon National Industrial Complex On December 22 last year, the inauguration ceremony of the Ultra-Large Manufacturing AI Global Joint Research Center was held at Hanma Hall, Gyeongnam National University.

The contest project, jointly prepared by Changwon Special City and Gyeongnam Province, will invest a total of 49.34 billion KRW over five years. It will focus on companies based in the root industries of the Changwon National Industrial Complex, such as metal, manufacturing, and processing, and will carry out software development through demonstration in four fields (CNC, forging processing, injection molding and assembly, press).

Through this demonstration project, equipment and products within manufacturing companies that form the core of the Changwon National Industrial Complex will be virtualized using advanced IT new technology called Digital Twin, enabling the pre-implementation of optimal workforce and equipment placement, thus providing the best solution for new factory establishment or expansion.

Additionally, in the product manufacturing process, errors occurring throughout all stages from design to final production will be diagnosed in advance, and various virtual test runs for optimal product manufacturing will help reduce product costs and enhance corporate competitiveness, greatly assisting companies within the Changwon National Industrial Complex to grow into global manufacturing enterprises.

The platform completed through this project is a platform whose effectiveness has been proven to the extent that global major manufacturing companies have widely used it as a means for optimization before equipment placement or product manufacturing. However, small-scale companies have found it difficult to access due to cost and technical issues. Therefore, through this project, it is expected that small and medium-sized enterprises within the Changwon National Industrial Complex will be able to utilize the high-priced platform used by global large corporations at a low cost.

Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, said, “This year marks the 50th anniversary of the designation of the Changwon National Industrial Complex, and we have achieved the great feat of being selected for three contest projects led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, with national funding reaching 60 billion KRW, together with Gyeongnam Province.” He added, “The creation of a world-class manufacturing innovation ecosystem in the national industrial complex through this and the use of a digital transformation (DX) innovation platform will serve as a catalyst for competitive innovation that can grow manufacturing companies in the Changwon National Industrial Complex into global enterprises over the next 50 years.”
