Gyeongbuk TP Invests 3.4 Billion KRW to Relocate Secondary Battery Technology Companies... Selected for Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Public Project

Gyeongbuk Province has been selected in the secondary battery focused industry sector of the National Technology Transfer Platform Project, announced by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and will promote technology transfer and commercialization related to secondary batteries for three years starting this year.

This project supports technology transfer and commercialization activation for companies by utilizing accumulated technologies, knowledge, and data from government R&D through the establishment of an online and offline technology trading platform.

Gyeongbuk TP Invests 3.4 Billion KRW to Relocate Secondary Battery Technology Companies... Selected for Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Public Project Gyeongbuk Technopark.

The project is led by Gyeongbuk Technopark and conducted as a consortium with three technoparks in Pohang, Gyeongnam, and Ulsan, along with the private sector. Over three years, with a budget of 3.4 billion KRW (1.8 billion KRW national funds, 1.2 billion KRW local funds, and 400 million KRW others), it aims to transfer national research and development results to the private sector and support the entire cycle from commercialization to investment and global expansion.

Gyeongbuk Province presented a vision to build a ‘Super-gap Secondary Battery Strategic Technology Commercialization Full-cycle Platform’ by mobilizing the scale-up and global expansion of the secondary battery industry, leveraging Gyeongbuk’s specialized infrastructure for secondary battery material production and recycling, Ulsan’s complete electric vehicles centered on Hyundai Motor, Gyeongnam’s shipbuilding and defense industries linked to secondary batteries, and private sector technology transfer know-how.

During the evaluation process, Gyeongbuk was recognized as the optimal site for the secondary battery industry ecosystem due to its abundant related upstream and downstream industries, including the Pohang secondary battery specialized complex, Gyeongju and Yeongcheon future car material and parts production bases, Gimcheon drone and autonomous driving demonstration base, Gumi secondary battery material production base, and Gyeongsan electric vehicle wireless charging base.

Detailed project contents include technology commercialization brokerage and consulting through coordinators, exploration of promising secondary battery technologies, improving commercialization success rates through technology proof of concept, and linking investment and global expansion through networking between technoparks and the private sector. The project focuses on supporting the secondary battery industry (over 50%) and additionally supports related upstream and downstream industries.

Furthermore, specialized coordinators will play a leading role in this project by operating two tracks in industry and commercialization fields. Together with an industry-academia-research expert council, core technologies that have undergone pre- and post-feasibility verification of transfer demand technologies will be applied to the secondary battery-related industry, ensuring effective technology transfer.

Choi Young-sook, Director of the Economic Industry Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, said, “Through the technology transfer platform secured by national research and development, we can timely introduce excellent technologies and expand the secondary battery industry ecosystem,” adding, “We will strive to support the market and corporate growth of upstream and downstream secondary battery industries through technology transfer and commercialization.”
