Starbucks Paints Wall of Aging 'Gyeongdong Market Parking Lot'

Win-Win Growth Committee and First Win-Win Activity of the Year
Utilizing Win-Win Fund Created at Gyeongdong 1960 Store

Starbucks Korea announced on the 17th that it carried out a repainting project on the aging walls of the Kyungdong Market parking lot in collaboration with the Win-Win Growth Committee. This is the first win-win activity with Kyungdong Market this year.

The win-win activity, held the previous day, was conducted using a community coexistence fund established at Starbucks’ 5th Community Store, ‘Kyungdong1960 Branch.’ Starbucks accumulates 300 KRW per item sold at this store to create the coexistence fund.

About 40 people participated in the repainting work on the aging walls, including Park Chi-hyung, Director of Operations at the Win-Win Growth Committee; Kim Young-baek, President of the Kyungdong Market Merchants Association; Choi Young-soo, CEO of KD Market Co., Ltd.; and Lee Da-hyun, Manager of Starbucks Kyungdong1960 Branch, adding significance to the local win-win activity.

The volunteers not only carried out maintenance work at the same location following the painting of the parking lot entrance done last June in cooperation with the Kyungdong Market Merchants Association but also completed additional painting work inside the area.

This repainting project was carried out reflecting proposals made through a win-win council involving local community members. Additionally, within this year, a walkway leveling project will be implemented to ensure the safety of customers and merchants visiting Kyungdong Market.

Park, Director of Operations at the Win-Win Growth Committee, said, “Recently, the Committee has selected the spread of a culture of win-win growth into local communities as a core task, promoting cooperation between large corporations and local small merchants. The Committee will continue to act as a supporter of Kyungdong Market and spread the warmth of local win-win growth nationwide.”

Kim Ji-young, ESG Team Leader at Starbucks, said, “Starbucks strives to support sustainable activities such as improving local infrastructure and developing win-win programs for cooperation with Kyungdong Market. Starting with this activity, we will explore ways to support many people to comfortably use Starbucks Kyungdong1960 Branch and Kyungdong Market.”

Meanwhile, last year, Starbucks carried out repainting of aging walls at Kyungdong Market, demolition of old facilities, and installation of signposts within the market. Ahead of Chuseok, to revitalize Kyungdong Market, Starbucks also held an event where customers who presented receipts showing purchases of 10,000 KRW or more at both the ‘Kyungdong1960 Branch’ and Kyungdong Market received a Starbucks logo mug as a gift.
