Yongin and Uijeongbu City Buses to Introduce 'Contactless Fare Payment' Starting the 19th

Gyeonggi Province will implement a ‘contactless (tagless) fare payment service’ that automatically charges bus fares upon boarding on approximately 950 buses across 134 city bus routes passing through Yongin City and Uijeongbu City starting from the 19th.

The contactless (tagless) bus fare payment service is a system that determines boarding and alighting status through Bluetooth wireless communication between beacons installed on the vehicles and passengers’ smartphones. It has been introduced and operated on Gyeonggi Province’s metropolitan buses since 2021.

To use the service, passengers install the ‘Tagless Pay-App’ on their smartphones and register prepaid or postpaid transportation cards. Then, when boarding or alighting the bus, the system automatically processes boarding and alighting and payment without the need to physically tap the transportation card terminal.

If passengers press the ‘mobile alighting bell’ button on the app before getting off the bus, an alert indicating a passenger’s intention to alight is displayed to the driver, eliminating the need to press the alighting bell manually or stand up from their seat.

To allow passengers to check whether the bus supports the service before boarding, tagless stickers are attached to the exterior of the vehicles, and an icon indicating tagless support is displayed in the location guidance service of the Gyeonggi Bus Information app.

If passengers use or transfer to buses or subways that do not support the service, they can pay fares and receive transfer discounts by tapping their cards on the terminals as per the existing method.

Yoon Tae-wan, Director of the Bus Policy Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We plan to apply the service in Yongin and Uijeongbu first and expand it to other regions in the second half of the year," adding, "We also plan to implement a safe return home service that sends tagless pay boarding and alighting information to guardians."

Meanwhile, the service provider, Moving Joy Co., Ltd., is offering promotional events for tagless use, including a 300 KRW discount (reward) per ride with no limit on the number of rides, 100% compensation (reward) for the first tagless payment, and raffle tickets proportional to the number of payments made.
