A Mysterious Red Foreign Car on Gangneung Coastal Road... "Are You Asking Me to Take a Photo Here?"

If Not Properly Maintained, It Seems It Will Rust Quickly

The BMW coupe 'Mini' has been installed at a photo zone set up on the Jeongdong and Simgok Badabuchaegil, known as the only coastal terrace trail in Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do. This has caused tourists to react with confusion.

Recently, Badabuchaegil was extended by 640 meters, offering various attractions. The newly created section includes a coastal promenade, a sea plaza, and a sky staircase, providing diverse photo spots. This area is also promoted targeting young people looking for scenic spots to post on social networking services (SNS).

However, there are also puzzled reactions as a striking red foreign car, the Mini, is displayed against the backdrop of the blue sea at the sea plaza. Critics point out that it does not harmonize with the beautiful natural scenery. Additionally, since the Mini is located in an area where high waves continuously hit, there are concerns that if not properly maintained, the car could rust or corrode within a short period.

Netizens expressed negative reactions such as, "It doesn't match the natural scenery and will quickly rust and become unsightly," "It would make more sense to place a 1970s or 1980s domestic old car rather than a Mini," "I don't know who came up with such an absurd idea since it's not even a sculpture," and "Who would make a photo zone with a Mini as the background?"

The car is known to have been displayed by the Gangneung Tourism Development Corporation for tourists to use as a photo zone. A representative from the Gangneung Tourism Development Corporation told Yonhap News, "We moved and displayed the colorful Mini to be used as a photo zone," adding, "Since the new section just opened, we do not yet know the response to the Mini photo zone, but we will continue to monitor it with interest."

Badabuchaegil, created in 2017, is a representative tourist destination in Gangneung where one can observe 2.3 million years of tectonic changes. As the only coastal terrace trail in Korea and designated as Natural Monument No. 437, it attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually on average. RM, a member of the group BTS, is also known to have visited this place to enjoy his vacation.
