"Let's Explore the Sun, Moon, and Stars in Our Neighborhood"... Nowon-gu Hosts 'Astronomy and Space Festival'

Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold the 'Astronomy and Space Festival' on April 20 in celebration of Science Month.

The event will take place at the Nowon Astronomy and Space Science Center, which opened near Junggye Station in 2017, and will feature ▲astronomy lectures ▲magic shows ▲observations at the observatory ▲planetarium screenings ▲experience booths, among others.

First, the director of the Nowon Astronomy and Space Science Center will give an astronomy lecture titled “Director, Please Read the Stars,” sharing stories about stars and time. A science magic show combining science to make it easy to understand will also be held.

In the planetarium, various videos will be screened every hour. Four videos will be shown: Aurora, featuring aurora footage shot by artist Kwon Oh-cheol in Yellowknife, Canada; Kokomong; Journey through the Universe; and Supermoon.

An observatory experience to vividly experience astronomy and space will also be provided. The ‘daytime’ solar observation allows viewing of sunspots and solar prominences, while the ‘nighttime’ celestial observation includes stars such as Arcturus in Bo?tes, Spica in Virgo, and the Praesepe open cluster.

Additionally, various experience booths will be operated. Interactive programs include ▲Ultraviolet Escape, where participants find hidden clues using ultraviolet LEDs to complete missions, and ▲Hidden Picture Hunt in the Dark, which observes the principle of light transmission. There will also be various craft programs related to ‘light,’ such as making ▲suncatchers ▲solar glasses ▲Galileo telescopes.

The programs are divided into on-site participation and first-come, first-served ticket distribution. Detailed information can be found on the Nowon Astronomy and Space Science Center website.

The district operates the ‘Starlight Reporters,’ the representative club of the Nowon Astronomy and Space Science Center, which offers a new concept of specialized science programs combining astronomy and humanities. On April 20, there will also be a ceremony to award press badges to the 6th Starlight Reporters.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “Through this Astronomy and Space Festival, we hope to spark curiosity about science and make science feel like a form of play that is easy to approach. We will continue to strive to expand opportunities for science education and experiences to nurture creative talents who will lead the future.”
