Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Commemorates Disability Day with Exhibition and Concert
"Hoping for Communication Beyond the Boundary Between Disabled and Non-Disabled"
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 17th that it will hold the Disabled Artists Exhibition "Bright and Beautiful" and the special concert "Melody of Love" at the Blue House Chuncheon Press Hall to commemorate Disabled Persons Day (the 20th).
The former event is hosted and organized by the Korea Federation of Disabled Cultural and Arts Organizations. From the 17th to the 20th, it will showcase thirty works by disabled artists active in various fields such as calligraphy, Oriental painting, and Western painting.
The latter will be performed by the Heart Visually Impaired Chamber Orchestra, composed of fifteen visually impaired musicians and ten non-disabled musicians. They will take the stage on the 20th to perform familiar movie soundtracks (OSTs), as well as musical and opera pieces. A Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official said, "Through collaboration with vocalists such as soprano Kang Hye-jung and baritone Woo Ju-ho, we will present diverse and moving melodies."
The Ministry is promoting various support policies for disabled artists. Last year, it established a priority purchase system for works created by disabled artists and opened Korea's first standard performance hall for disabled artists, the Modu Arts Theater.
This year, it plans to create a standard exhibition hall for disabled artists (Seoul Square Annex) and mandate regular performances and exhibitions by disabled artists at national and public cultural facilities. Additionally, it will build a distribution platform for works by disabled artists to establish the priority purchase system and expand the budget for supporting disabled artists.
Minister Yoo In-chon of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said, "I hope disabled artists will demonstrate the power of culture and arts that communicate beyond the boundaries of disability and non-disability."
