Geonyang University, Chungnam National University, Hanbat National University, Hannam University, and Other Universities in the Daejeon Chungcheong Region Designated
Sunchonhyang University has gained another chance to reapply for the Ministry of Education-led ‘Glocal University 30’ project.
On the 16th, the Ministry of Education and the Glocal University Committee announced the results of the ‘2024 Glocal University Preliminary Designation Evaluation,’ selecting Sunchonhyang University and Konyang University as preliminary designated universities in Chungnam.
The ‘Glocal University 30’ project selects 30 non-metropolitan universities that will break down internal and external barriers within universities and lead co-growth between universities and their regions based on partnerships with local communities and industries. The project supports these universities with a budget of 100 billion KRW over five years.
A total of 109 universities submitted 65 innovation plans for this preliminary designation application. In the Chungcheong region, 9 universities from Daejeon, 2 from Sejong, and 16 from Chungnam submitted plans in solo, joint, and integrated formats.
As a result of the preliminary designation evaluation, Sunchonhyang University and Konyang University were selected in Chungnam, while Chungnam National University, Hanbat National University, and Hannam University were selected in Daejeon.
Sunchonhyang University, selected as a preliminary university in the 2023 Glocal University selection, had faced disappointment after failing to receive final designation.
However, to become Chungnam’s first Glocal University, the university has spent a year preparing thoroughly, focusing on university education innovation based on a student-personalized education system that allows students to design their own education period, patterns, and majors, as well as regional innovation linked to Chungnam’s strategic industries such as Medibio, Mobility, and Carbon Neutrality.
The main project contents include abolishing the existing 10 colleges and 50 majors to build a student-personalized university system, proposing educational innovation such as △establishing a four-university system with 3-5 year programs △operating small majors (around 15 students) linked to local industries △making all faculty members independent of departments and reallocating them.
Through this, the plan is to achieve regional innovation by establishing the Chungnam Local-Glocal Industry-Academia-Research Shared Campus, a cooperation hub for industry-academia-research linked to Chungnam’s specialized industries of Medibio and Mobility.
President Kim Seung-woo said, “This preliminary designation was likely highly evaluated because it proposed a new paradigm in higher education with a flexible curriculum and educational innovation that guarantees students’ mega-choice rights. We will actively strive to realize a university that revitalizes the region and a region that nurtures the university by ensuring students’ mega-choice rights and contributing to the rise of the region’s mega economic zone through outstanding talents produced by the Glocal University.”
